Sophia Balko: A Golden Flash Making Her Mark at Kent State
There’s something special about watching a gymnast’s college career start to click and for Sophia Balko, 2026 was a pretty good sign of things to come.
The Kent State Golden Flash from Morgantown, West Virginia, is heading into the 2026-27 season as a junior, and she has already established herself as a valuable member of the Kent State gymnastics lineup.
Before arriving in Kent, Balko was already building an impressive résumé.
At the club level, she was a 2024 National Qualifier and had quite the 2024 season in West Virginia, winning state titles in the all-around, vault, bars, beam and floor at Level 10. She had also won the West Virginia Level 10 all-around and floor titles in 2023.
So yes, she arrived at Kent State with a few medals already packed in the suitcase! Balko attended University High School in Morgantown and competed for Aerial Port before becoming a Golden Flash. She is also studying Exercise Science at Kent State.
Balko made her official collegiate debut during the 2025 season, competing on bars and recording a season-best 9.725 against Ball State.

But it was her sophomore campaign in 2026 where things really started to get interesting.
Balko competed on bars in 10 of Kent State’s 11 regular-season meets, while also appearing on vault in eight regular-season meets, including the MAC Championships.
And then came those career highs.
She posted a 9.850 on vault twice during the season against Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan while also producing a career-best 9.825 on bars at Western Michigan. Her season averages were 9.769 on vault and 9.727 on bars.

Balko was also part of Kent State’s postseason lineup at the 2026 Mid-American Conference Championships.
The Golden Flashes finished third with a 195.325, and Balko contributed a 9.725 on bars during the championship meet.

For a gymnast whose college career is still developing, that’s an encouraging foundation.
And perhaps the most exciting part? Balko’s best numbers are already beginning to appear on multiple events.
Now listed as a junior for the 2026-27 Kent State roster, Balko enters the new season with two collegiate seasons of experience behind her and some very useful momentum.

Her 9.850 vault and 9.825 bars scores from 2026 give her some serious numbers to chase and with another year of NCAA experience under her belt, it will be fun to see whether she can push those career highs even higher.
For Golden Flashes fans, Sophia Balko is certainly a name worth keeping an eye on.
